Using sermons, devotional manuals, journals, memoirs, letters and other primary source material, the author rediscovers and reconstructs the spiritual theology and spiritual practices of nineteenth-century Unitarians and Transcendentalists. He creatively re-appropriates and re-packages these practices for use by contemporary Unitarian Universalists, including teaching handouts and syllabi for congregational and graduate school classes. Both clergy and laity are asked to explore the need for self-care and how Sabbath might be employed as a spiritual practice.  The implications for not observing Sabbath in one's life and ministry are noted experientially, through research and the use of a congregational teaching tool.  The author utilizes surveys, teaching objectives, and standard research to promote Sabbath as an instrument for fostering spiritual awareness and healing.
