Using sermons, devotional manuals, journals, memoirs, letters and other primary source material, the author rediscovers and reconstructs the spiritual theology and spiritual practices of nineteenth-century Unitarians and Transcendentalists. He creatively re-appropriates and re-packages these practices for use by contemporary Unitarian Universalists, including teaching handouts and syllabi for congregational and graduate school classes. The project demonstrates the potential of this work to enrich contemporary Unitarian Universalist spirituality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716015649587200,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:55:40.950Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:16:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:11:18Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f5004840-a7c3-490a-922c-eee5808ed1f1","accessControl_ssim":["ca3a216e-4168-41ba-b287-a0b2dc227475"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Out of control: building a house of prayer experience (h.o.p.e) within a congregation"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:16:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:07:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b6877e5e-9356-49f6-8878-62683fc7554d"],"hasLease_ssim":["e2f29d34-9dd8-47be-bbba-6c8413fdc1fb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce G Epperly"],"year_tesim":["2010"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author therefore conducted an ethographical study to find recommendations to share with church leaders and pastors. To validate this theory, the author proposed to introduce into the St. John Baptist youth mentoring program a component of remembering, reclaiming, and sharing stories in the African American tradition, to encourage faith and promote academic performance. The author researched literature to substantiate the significance of storytelling as a transforming experience. Research included stories of ancestors, the Black church tradition and personal life stories.
