This project afforded me a unique opportunity to examine FBC/SAM's process of getting things done, its context, ecology, theology, culture, resources, authority, and history, all of which forms the fabric for studying congregations. This endeavor presents a number of challenges arising from the existing congregational culture, the host/guest power differential, and cultural and linguistic difference. In response to this perceived need, three lay ministry teams were commissioned, and ongoing programs of support, education and nurture were developed. The programs, the process by which they were developed, the setting that inspired them, and the theological foundations they were built on, including theologies of community, ministry of the laity, Christian baptism, marriage and funeral, are included. In the context of a middle-sized congregation surrounded by social change, the project designs two worship experiences as settings in which the connection between spirituality and social change can be nurtured, integrating insights from biblical studies, theological reflection, and Congregational history.
