The study, through the use of a variety of instruments, examines adjustments, critical incidents and surprises experienced by new pastors and how these affect their competency to be effective leaders.  The study makes a number of suggestions to future graduates and to parishes, seminaries, judicatories (diocese and archdiocese) to assist them in making this adjustment and transition. The sample consisted of 280 Catholic lay women ranging in age from 18 to 60+ years who currently serve the Church in some capacity in the Diocese of Burlington, Vermont. Response data to questionnaires and interviews are reported by descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and cross tabulations including chi-square tests for variable independence.  These findings confirmed the original hypotheses except equal representation. The Index of General Affect was used to measure caregiver satisfaction with caregiving encounters before and after training that included bio-medical information on Alzheimer's type dementia and religious symbol re-presentation (based on Susanne Langer's theories). Contrary to expectations, satisfaction scores were high after the initial encounter and declined significantly after both types of presentation.
