Using the creation narratives and parallel New Testament themes, biblical bases for a theology of intimate friendship are described.  The psychological need for friendship in all stages of adulthood is documented.  Societal, sexual and ethical dilemmas about intimate friendships are described. The study used a case history method involving four cases drawn from the author's work as a hospital chaplain and as a pastoral counselor.  The histories were preceded by a theoretical investigation of the condition of depression and of pastoral assessment and treatment concerns.
