A sermon series identifying what constitutes active church membership was presented to the congregation; a pretest-posttest opinionnaire was used to determine its effectiveness.  The author developed a model encourager program which included a membership committee and an eight-session encourager training course.  The effectiveness of the course was measured by the experimental method. The project utilized a format that included a control group and an experimental group of fifteen people each.  Learning methods included ten weeks of group study, individual study assignments, and fellowship.  The ten topics covered in group study sessions were: assurance of salvation, the lordship of Christ, the need for spiritual growth, a daily quiet time, prayer, Bible study, the church, witnessing, God's will, and personal relationships. The sessions introduce new members to the doctrines of God, Christ, church, salvation, and the Christian life.  These studies allow church members to work at their own pace and according to their own schedule requirements.  This method will enable members to complete a program of instruction that otherwise may be impossible for them to complete.  The program of instruction thus is contextualized, responding to the needs and schedules of the residents of Tierra Verde.
