Eighty-seven cross-cultural church planters and eleven mission agency executives were surveyed in order to understand better current practices of missionary selection and requirements for missionary service.  Church planters appraised the value of their pre-field training and practical experience.  Mission agency executives explained their process for candidate selection. Information was gathered as interviews in a multiple case study.  Twenty cases were examined and each case included a new believer, the believer's non-Christian parents and the believer's pastor. The study showed that control was significant, but the way it affected decisions depended largely on the degree to which the parents were opposed to Christianity. Current missionary activities in Japan are examined.  A survey was conducted on the teaching of missiology in Japanese seminaries.  Both surveys confirmed the need to establish a clearer understanding of evangelical missiology in Japan.  David J Hesselgrave's textbook, Today's choices for tomorrow's mission, is evaluated as being the best choice among missiological texts for Japanese Christians.  The question whether a dynamic equivalent translation is better than a formal translation is discussed. It focuses on Mennonite work and problems faced regarding a lack of leaders, of growth, and of goals.  Case studies and questionnaires are used. In 1980, theological education by extension (geographical extension by a recognized institution) for both laypersons and leaders was proposed as a feasible solution.  In 1990, the basic situation having changed little, TEE is still seen as valid. But several other options exist, such as Mennonites in Japan starting their own program, or getting courses and faculty into key schools.
