The writer combined a desire to promote growth through preaching from the gospels and passion for the disciplines into a project that draws the two together.  The topic of spirituality was explored widely, and the gospels were read repeatedly to see how the spiritual life was stressed therein.  The disciplines highlighted were 1) Bible intake, 2) prayer, 3) fasting, 4) solitude, 5) submission, 6) worship/celebration, and 7) generosity. The project consists of twelve lesson plans developed around the church's ministry values.  The lessons were taught to the board of elders and a pilot group. The historical background and theological rationale for confirmation is presented, as well as an analysis of the physical, cognitive, emotional, social, moral, and faith development of thirteen- and fourteen-year olds. Interviews were conducted with representatives of five Lutheran churches with unique confirmation programs. There is little understanding of the strategic need for a phased program of disciple making. Some churches are behind in this matter in that the church makes no arrangement for a planned, cohesive, well-coordinated ministry of taking people from the basic truths of the gospel and moves them on in the growing process. Pastors can have effective ministry as disciple makers and as change agents in the local church to help alleviate this problem. There are people in the local church who have never moved beyond simple belief in Jesus Christ; one result being a void in lay-workers and stunted spiritual lives. This major project is designed to demonstrate practically how a pastor can effectively lead a men's small group basic discipleship course.
