I, though, am ordained in the Evangelical Free Church.  Much of the American church dwells in a culture that does not seek to deal squarely with death.  The irony is that in this death-denying culture people at one moment deny death, and at the same time 'experience more deaths' through television, movies, and video games (in some of the new video games people seek to kill people at every turn) than any civilization in human history.  We seek death in our entertainment, while at the same time we fear death's invasion into our lives.  Life forces us to deal with the very thing we dread--death.  We seek to place death in the realm of fiction until it comes in our door. In life, death controls the real story line. The American church rarely focuses on death.  The church primarily deals with the subject of death at the time of death--the funeral.  After the funeral we seek to return to normal life as quickly as possible, though death has removed normalcy forever for the family and friends of the deceased.  The result is that most American Christians are ill prepared to face life's expected conclusion--either theirs, or their loved ones.  The goal of my project is to help local churches present a Christian theology of death; to provide practical helps in discussing these issues in the church; and to teach church people to cope with death, dying, and grief from the Scriptures (this will be done in four seminars). The selected pastors were asked to fill out a five-page survey about their own personal and professional development practices.  The author reviewed the biblical/theological data regarding the New Testament role of pastor/teacher. The author then conducted a brief survey of the personal and professional practices of past Christian leaders. How can the pastor remain focused on sermon preparation and pastoral care when the complexity of ministry and the management of his staff are overwhelming him?  The author sought answers through a variety of means: searching the Scriptures for management principles; researching literature on church administration; and doing field visits of several churches whose leadership teams have wrestled with this issue themselves. Organizational change is a process that can be defined by common stages.  By studying organizational change, performing case studies, and drawing on my personal experience, specific stages of transformation for New Testament churches have been defined.  The case studies themselves are limited by criteria, which produce a beginning model.  The end result is defined by scriptural criteria for a New Testament church.  By examining the transformational process of the four case study churches, which have met the criteria, and researching written material on organizational transformation, a multi-stage process specific to churches emerged.  This process was then used as a comparison to my current context as the senior pastor of Northside Baptist Church. In this climate, how does a military chaplain do expository doctrinal preaching?  This writer will attempt to show that doctrinal preaching is best done in an expository manner through diligent study, prayer, and a reliance on the Holy Spirit.  Relevance is accomplished when the particulars of a given congregation are addressed.  Chapter one addresses the problem of preaching that is mostly eisegetical and not exegetical.  Chapter two establishes the biblical, sociological, and theological basis for doctrinal preaching with a contemporary congregation in mind.  Chapter three reveals the methodology to address the stated problem, that of a preaching series on Bible doctrine. The stated primary goal is transformation, seeking the salvation of sinners and sanctification of saints.  Progress of the project is also charted. Chapter four concludes with an evaluation gleaned from 24 surveys that were completed at the conclusion of the 14-week preaching series.
