The categories for this descriptive analysis include their homiletic structures, strategies for interpreting the Bible and its uptake in the delivery of a sermon, and observations concerning actual sermon delivery.  Having analyzed and described these styles of preaching, the project author further engages them through an exercise of replication whereby these particular styles are imitated in sermons composed by the project author and preached to a congregation-based focus group. As an element of the persuasive milieu of Scripture, the charge to preach includes style.  Both testaments manifest God's love of linguistic art for its theology.  Current homiletics textbooks, however, cannot hope to explain all theories of style and include performance pedagogy.  This project, therefore, developed lectures on style's verbal and nonverbal factors for preaching, taught the lessons, and evaluated the learning outcomes to identify course improvements.  The research design combines content analysis of student work, ethnographic study of teacher and student critiques, and survey research. I, though, am ordained in the Evangelical Free Church.  Much of the American church dwells in a culture that does not seek to deal squarely with death.  The irony is that in this death-denying culture people at one moment deny death, and at the same time 'experience more deaths' through television, movies, and video games (in some of the new video games people seek to kill people at every turn) than any civilization in human history.  We seek death in our entertainment, while at the same time we fear death's invasion into our lives.  Life forces us to deal with the very thing we dread--death.  We seek to place death in the realm of fiction until it comes in our door. In life, death controls the real story line. The American church rarely focuses on death.  The church primarily deals with the subject of death at the time of death--the funeral.  After the funeral we seek to return to normal life as quickly as possible, though death has removed normalcy forever for the family and friends of the deceased.  The result is that most American Christians are ill prepared to face life's expected conclusion--either theirs, or their loved ones.  The goal of my project is to help local churches present a Christian theology of death; to provide practical helps in discussing these issues in the church; and to teach church people to cope with death, dying, and grief from the Scriptures (this will be done in four seminars). The selected pastors were asked to fill out a five-page survey about their own personal and professional development practices.  The author reviewed the biblical/theological data regarding the New Testament role of pastor/teacher. The author then conducted a brief survey of the personal and professional practices of past Christian leaders. Closer to home the priority of preaching slides in our churches amidst a culture sedated by information overload and anti-intellectualism. Moreover, missiologists report that where the church is exploding in African, Latin American and Asian continents, new converts are regularly enfolded into churches that are led by inadequately trained bi-vocational pastors. Significant kingdom gains are frequently undermined by weak theology in the pulpit and spurious teaching. The result is a weakened church. Good preaching is critical to the health and wellbeing of our churches. More specifically, it is expository preaching that best equips and sustains healthy, reproducing congregations. This project is my attempt to address this reality. The purpose was to develop a Bible memorization seminar that can be taught either as a Sunday School class or as a one-time seminar. The '40 days of purpose' is a church-based campaign that was created at the Saddleback Community Church in Lake Forest, California, where Rick Warren is the senior pastor, and is designed to address five elements of church health: evangelism, worship, fellowship, discipleship and service.  This project will review Saddleback's understanding of these areas of church health as well as the way they are presented in the '40 days of purpose' and present an alternative understanding and presentation, as well as the addition of prayer as a key element of church health. As specifically stated in the title, this project contends for the centrality of expository preaching and as such, it presents both the philosophical foundation and the homiletical process of expository preaching. Specific illustrations are given on how to preach expository sermons from New Testament Epistles and Old Testament narrative, with suggestions on how to make exposition relevant to congregations of the twenty-first century.
