When relationships deepen, personal and community transformation occurs. By extension, the generative hope of a community and its children prosper.The people of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Oxford, North Carolina want to know their neighbors in the perpetually declining, poverty-ridden neighborhoods around the church. This poverty-trap imprisons parents, children, and families without hope of a different future. Our community and its citizens can be so much more than we are; and the faith community offers a unique commodity in this transformation. Jesus Christ calls us beyond our comforting walls to address socio-economic issues that plaque our communities. Through the love of God and deepening relationships, we authentically experience transformation through parity.The faith community cannot accomplish the mission alone. St. Augustine of Hippo directs the citizens of the City of God, temporarily residing in the earthly city (Babylon), to identify the 'common good'. Our Christian commodity is a 'peculiar peace' and love of God, which draws us outward to our neighbor. This project is local, community relationship-building - a partnership between St. Stephen's, Social Services, and the Boys and Girls Club. The church, government, and local stakeholders identify the common good, as we jointly offer and engage practical resources for the parents of children enrolled in club activities. It is not another program; rather a space to grow and learn together with neighbors. The social principles of subsidiarity, sphere sovereignty, and generativity under-gird this faith-based partnership; and qualitative data in the form of surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, and interviews highlight the research methods. In the end, the experience of participants is transformative, with new neighborhood partnerships forming, and deepening, holy relationships changing hearts, one-by-one. Lay and clergy leaders in congregations must find ways to share key pieces of not only denominational identity, but also fundamentals of the faith. As well, we must embrace ways of sharing our individual and collective spiritual narratives with newcomers so that they can both connect with our larger spiritual narrative and tell their own. This paper describes the efforts of one congregation's attempt to work with key lay leaders to help them identify pieces of their Christian and denominational identity, to train them in telling their own spiritual narratives to each other, to help them experiment in interacting with and welcoming newcomers (offering those newcomers threads of identity and narrative), and to see what connections, if any, happen between the leaders and the newcomers and in the larger congregation. This thesis tests the proposition that lay leaders will feel more comfortable,competent, and authoritative in welcoming and integrating newcomers into a congregation if they are grounded in core components of denominational identity, can articulate their own faith narrative, and have engaged in Action-Reflection experiments/exercises with newcomers within the context of a formational small group. This project engaged key lay leaders in a multi-stage formation program, tested their interactions with newcomers and their perceptions of themselves in doing so, and discovered that formation activities alone produced limited, mixed results in improving relationships with newcomers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716721375838208,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:06:53.983Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"James Larkin Pahl","hits":1,"label":"James Larkin Pahl"},{"value":"Regina A Ballard","hits":1,"label":"Regina A Ballard"},{"value":"William C Thomas","hits":1,"label":"William C Thomas"},{"value":"William Gray Lesesne","hits":1,"label":"William Gray Lesesne"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Congregations--Self-evaluation","hits":1,"label":"Congregations--Self-evaluation"},{"value":"Feminist theology","hits":1,"label":"Feminist theology"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Anxiety","hits":1,"label":"Anxiety"},{"value":"Bible--Criticism, interpretation","hits":1,"label":"Bible--Criticism, interpretation"},{"value":"Christian education--Philosophy","hits":1,"label":"Christian education--Philosophy"},{"value":"Church growth","hits":1,"label":"Church growth"},{"value":"Clergy--Psychology","hits":1,"label":"Clergy--Psychology"},{"value":"Commitment to the church","hits":1,"label":"Commitment to the church"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)","hits":3,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary (Alexandria, VA)"},{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary","hits":1,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2013","hits":3,"label":"2013"},{"value":"2017","hits":1,"label":"2017"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Miscellaneous","hits":4,"label":"Miscellaneous"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Virginia Theological Seminary","hits":4,"label":"Virginia Theological Seminary"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
