It can be difficult for a layman to fill the role with confidence and joy. This project was designed to develop and orientation process that is both meaningful and manageable in a layman's life. The research included a survey of pastors in similar churches, a survey of participants before and after the retreat, and a study of literature on church leadership development. Biblical and historical moorings of church membership were examined, particularly the exercise of corrective church discipline. Means were sought for the skillful oversight of church membership and for the propagation of an environment which nurtures congregational appreciation for it.
