The method used is a case study of Memorial United Methodist Church, a congregation which committed itself to changing its racial composition.  The case study provides implications for other congregations attempting a similar re-creation as well as suggestions for various levels of the United Methodist connectional system. Suggestions are made for more effective cross-racial appointments. The method used in the survey of local congregations and the educational forums for the pastors and laity on the conference level. Even though the general experience of cross-racial appointments is positive, it is still being tolerated rather than being fully accepted.
