Applied to the context are congregational studies findings in regard to endowed churches, and a biblical studies component in examining the resources of faith. Having studied the congregation's history and ethos in concert with a sister church, the aim of the project was to develop a leadership covenant with the two congregations.  Working with the joint pastor-parish relations committee, a variety of instruments were used to discern an appropriate leadership style in that situation. The thesis is that Christian faith can undermine the power of hopelessness, even in the face of devastating circumstances. The project includes a theology of hope and contrasts the characteristics of hope with those of individualism in contemporary American society.  The theology is actively applied in a series of six hour-and-a-half sessions with senior high youth. A mail survey was used to assess the impact of AIDS on the parochial ministries of pastors serving parishes in the Metropolitan Association, New York Conference, United Church of Christ. The research of the project uses methods from the Congregational Studies Institute (July 3-13, 1984, Union Seminary, New York) in the areas of identity, context, program and process.  It applies them to the author's ministerial setting.  The second purpose of this project is to develop an outline of a five-year plan for mission and ministry which the leadership of the author's congregation could use to understand the church's changing socio-cultural environment.  The research uncovers a mission orientation in the learned identity, context, program and process of the congregation. This project is a case study. The major problem addressed is how to overcome the apathy and resistance to interchurch cooperation among Protestant churches within a medium-sized metropolitan community.
