The author presents historical and Wesleyan theological foundations that offer validity for the import and perseverance of such churches.  Instruments based on the interaction of biblical narrative, church history, and personal spirituality were designed to advance the spiritual growth of a core study group.  The congregation explored methods of reframing their story through historical reflection of past narrative events, faith visioning for the future and community building through creativity and play. To answer this, a six-month project involving teaching, preaching, spiritual formation, study and discussion was undertaken to help the congregation learn more about their Wesleyan heritage and reclaim relevant portions of it. Surveys at the beginning and end of the project were used to measure learning growth. A sermon series, a small group experience, and other awareness opportunities were utilized. Declining spiritual vitality need not be normative for the denomination. Through research, questionnaires, and interviews, the analysis asks four theological questions concerning revival of three different groups who have witnessed renewal in their midst: the leaders of the Great Awakenings, the current revived Methodist Church of Cuba, and five revived United Methodist congregations in Virginia.
