A study series on the nature of the church and its mission, developed and implemented by the pastor, is presented to a group of laity. At a retreat the laity give formation to the statement, which receives congregational adoption. Questionnaires help analyze the laity's beliefs about the nature of the church and its mission. The thesis/text is divided into two parts which address the sociological and theological dimensions of the church, respectively. Part one deals with the context of the church in America, the development of denominationalism, and the church and culture in terms of the church as a product of culture. Part two deals with the church in the New Testament, the views of Luther, Calvin and Wesley on the church, Avery Dulles' models of the church, and considers the views of Karl Barth and H Richard Niebuhr. The thesis/text suggests that our understanding of the church is best expressed in dialectical terms. God is the one who calls us, loves us and reaches out to us first, but there is also a human response. With few exceptions, Baptist theological studies have largely ignored it. The lingering shadows of revivalism have left most Baptists without 'a sense of the liturgical' and with a fear of anything that feels formal. Differences in liturgical practices exist between different groups of Baptists, and distinctions can be made between British Baptists and Baptists in America and between American and Southern Baptists. As early as the eighteenth century there were Baptists who contended against the dangers of subjectivism. Baptists' free church tradition moreover is not without a liturgical and theological perspective necessary for the development of 'a sense of the liturgical.' the work of P. T. Forsyth, for instance, demonstrates what can be done with worship in the free church tradition. The best hope for liturgical renewal lies in a historical-theological perspective. Rethinking understanding of worship is best done in a laboratory setting, i.e., in planning and evaluating services of worship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717067012702208,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:12:23.608Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:46:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:11:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"02bb226a-7739-4603-bce8-d35de8adcc99","accessControl_ssim":["7b3f9624-f2c8-482e-a001-c20dea31d527"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Restoring eucharistic participation in the local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:46:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:11:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b2c8f7ea-4063-4ba0-9821-bc01349ad620"],"hasLease_ssim":["7bba7759-d7d9-4ff6-b0f9-c091b9c2e2ed"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James C Logan"],"year_tesim":["1983"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Present practice is not consistent with historical Christianity nor with Wesleyan Methodism. To be actively involved in the healing of the broken body of Christ this part of their heritage must be understood and reclaimed. Meeting with a reflection group, representative of the congregation, Methodist eucharistic heritage, ecumenical and liturgical renewal, and local customs were studied. The church year provided the vehicle through which themes of the eucharist were celebrated. Taped interviews with the congregation following each service helped assess progress. Initial indications show a gradual moving away from a penitential understanding to a greater sense of community celebration."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716993358626816,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:11:13.366Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:59:58Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:05:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d7f27e95-396a-48e9-a07c-4e09bca6ff59","accessControl_ssim":["79ec412c-bb61-4866-bafc-4f4383d5320a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Are we the church? spiritual formation of the congregation through listening, discernment, and obedience"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:59:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:18:18Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2f7b08cf-7570-4d0f-8ccc-3312e70a5f26"],"hasLease_ssim":["b5ca507f-5457-495a-9dce-ce459f14c230"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James C Logan"],"year_tesim":["2001"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. In structuring teaching, regular worship, and focused discussions, a group of congregational leaders journeyed together through Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, noting their faith experiences and encouraging one another in faithful living. Through listening for God in their gathering together and daily living; through patient discernment that was willing to embrace paradox and remain open to newness; and through humble and, sometimes, courageous obedience to God's revealed word, they gained understanding of the life to which they are called, and both they and the congregation were empowered to be the continuing incarnation of Christ in the world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720413846044672,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:05:35.397Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
