The literature search examined biblical, theological, and historical foundations.  The field research was conducted using a basic questionnaire with twenty questions to conduct open-ended, guided interviews.  The sample consisted of key Pentecostal leaders from the Assemblies of God and key non-Pentecostal evangelical leaders serving in strategic positions with ministry experience of over twenty-five years.  The literature search revealed that theologians and practitioners of church history who overemphasized either the Word or the Spirit fell into error, portrayed a lack of balance, and caused division in the church.  The field research revealed that despite the differences in theologies and labels, the work of the Spirit was pretty similar. By distinguishing too sharply between the Word and the Spirit, the church has lost an important biblical perspective and fractured the Body of Christ.  Building bridges across denominational boundaries will help to unite and strengthen the church, which must be grounded in the Word and empowered by the Spirit."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721439491784704,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:21:53.529Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:32:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:17:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"38cd3c81-fc12-4af5-a998-38072c17bd41","accessControl_ssim":["da6561e8-b9b5-425d-be09-b1085173267a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["An investigation into the motivation for and training in short-term missions among Australian students and short-term missionaries"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:32:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:46:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e731d9dd-c43e-4e9e-8f5e-f990a570c017"],"hasLease_ssim":["89a5f097-fc1a-43f2-af46-0ec127e0da50"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["James E Plueddemann"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Pauline Y Golder"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Short-term missions","Strategy","Missions","Missionaries","Motivation (Psychology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["With short-term mission growing in popularity and having reported mixed effects, this study used mainly a web-based self-report questionnaire among Australian theological students and short-term missionaries to find that the main motivation for short-term missions given by the 149 respondents was a desire to serve God, followed closely by spiritual and personal development opportunities. The author evaluated the development of these traits in seven Brazilian seminarians during a four-week missions internship in Paraguay.  Self-reporting, participant observation, national informant observations, and pre- and post-internship testing involving the Intercultural Competency Scale were used for evaluation. Two control groups were also utilized.  Few students evidenced growth in intercultural sensitivity.  The internship apparently deflated the cultural expectations of others.  Considerable growth was noted in adventuresomeness, though not verbal boldness. The purpose of this project was to discover factors that contribute to the resiliency and retention of missionaries who have gone through traumatic events in their missionary career in Africa and yet continue to serve there.  This qualitative study used narrative methodology and involved 35 interviews with missionaries who had experienced various traumas.  Four factors that respondents brought into their trauma event were: a strong personal conviction, a preparedness from birth, words from God, and sturdy relationships.  Four factors which emerged from the trauma were experiencing the keeper side of God, hearing authoritative leadership voices, quickly finding new ministry foci, and benefiting from functional networks.  Three unexpected factors from the trauma event were a less encumbered way of living, embracing sudden transitions as doors to new ministries, and a reshaped life for future ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717425019617280,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:18:05.030Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Astrid Rohini Aiyadurai","hits":1,"label":"Astrid Rohini Aiyadurai"},{"value":"Kevin D Bradford","hits":1,"label":"Kevin D Bradford"},{"value":"Pauline Y Golder","hits":1,"label":"Pauline Y Golder"},{"value":"Ronald W Brown","hits":1,"label":"Ronald W Brown"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Theology, Evangelical","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Evangelical"},{"value":"Theology, Pentecostal","hits":1,"label":"Theology, Pentecostal"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Missions","hits":2,"label":"Missions"},{"value":"Short-term missions","hits":2,"label":"Short-term missions"},{"value":"Baptism in the Holy Spirit","hits":1,"label":"Baptism in the Holy Spirit"},{"value":"Holy Spirit--History of doctrines","hits":1,"label":"Holy Spirit--History of doctrines"},{"value":"Intercultural communication","hits":1,"label":"Intercultural communication"},{"value":"Missionaries","hits":1,"label":"Missionaries"}],"label":"Subject"},{"name":"location_sim","items":[{"value":"Africa","hits":1,"label":"Africa"}],"label":"Location"},{"name":"language_sim","items":[{"value":"English","hits":4,"label":"English"}],"label":"Language"},{"name":"publisher_sim","items":[{"value":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School","hits":4,"label":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"}],"label":"Publisher"},{"name":"date_created_sim","items":[],"label":"Date Created"},{"name":"types_sim","items":[{"value":"Text","hits":4,"label":"Text"}],"label":"Type"},{"name":"year_sim","items":[{"value":"2005","hits":1,"label":"2005"},{"value":"2006","hits":1,"label":"2006"},{"value":"2007","hits":1,"label":"2007"},{"value":"2009","hits":1,"label":"2009"}],"label":"Year"},{"name":"format_sim","items":[],"label":"Format"},{"name":"member_of_collections_ssim","items":[{"value":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School","hits":4,"label":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"}],"label":"Collections"},{"name":"degree_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":4,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Degree"},{"name":"discipline_sim","items":[],"label":"Discipline"},{"name":"degree_granting_institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School","hits":4,"label":"Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"}],"label":"Degree Granting Institution"},{"name":"department_sim","items":[],"label":"Department"},{"name":"funder_name_sim","items":[],"label":"Funder Name"},{"name":"event_title_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Title"},{"name":"event_date_sim","items":[],"label":"Event Date"},{"name":"institution_sim","items":[{"value":"Atla RIM","hits":4,"label":"Atla RIM"}],"label":"Host Institution"}],"pages":{"current_page":1,"next_page":null,"prev_page":null,"total_pages":1,"limit_value":10,"offset_value":0,"total_count":4,"first_page?":true,"last_page?":true}}}
