She formed a study group, stressed the importance of congregational fellowship, and taught about spiritual gifts. The group remained open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit, took an inventory, and sought to use their gifts in the community. The class completed an evaluation and the author developed a gifts guide. She concluded that the study group participants have begun to use their gifts to serve the church and its multi-ethnic community."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715233440202752,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:43:14.977Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:50:04Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:27:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c70cfa12-b350-477a-b875-7f8370f84e25","accessControl_ssim":["f42197da-31fa-44d5-a1af-ab30fe2e1e0b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["What God has called me to do? help to set my people free"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T14:49:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:50:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2f5bce89-bc36-4f14-8b75-49daffe6d4c5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1c200f48-5a4c-4e9d-99f8-47b5dcbd0990"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James M Shopshire"],"year_tesim":["2012"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The leadership, guidance, and participation of people of color are needed to develop ministries to assist ex-offenders and their families in order to restore wholesomeness to our communities. The author utilized the pastoral ethnographic study as the method of research. The conclusions reached from this study reflect the astronomical injustices executed specifically in the African American communities. There is an urgent need for faith-based communities to become educated and involved in the freedom of our people and the restoration of our communities and families."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721791678054400,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:27:29.400Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:09:08Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:41:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"50813920-27fb-4c8c-b77b-5bb573a1db33","accessControl_ssim":["17e8bbe7-742f-4783-93fe-d399cac271d0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'Why we can't wait': the quest for intentional inclusion in a Black Baptist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:09:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:29:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["876fc6e6-5210-4058-a9e4-db657055c140"],"hasLease_ssim":["2152bdc1-8a7e-44a0-9918-84d98a21b802"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James M Shopshire"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A local church can be a catalyst for change by challenging its members to make room for the other, thereby experiencing growth and development as spiritual beings. African American 'first churches' grew and blossomed, reflecting the diverse population, interests, and concerns of the African American community and practicing ministry from 'down-under' as Jesus did. Taking Asbury United Methodist Church as an example of an African American first church in Washington DC, this project studies how such churches began and developed while explaining why many of them have become middle class enclaves with a privatized religious expression. Their corporate ministry is private and detached, concerned with the institution's internal environment. Past glories of antebellum African American first churches--commitment to liberation and a ministry from down-under, challenging the status quo and preferring the least--are their future hopes."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718942089936896,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:42:11.821Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"D.Min.
