The economy of Haiti during its three five-year-plans which includes the present time of 1985 is outlined to show the tremendous amount and increase in foreign aid during these years as compared with previous years.  The Methodist Church, the first Protestant group to enter Haiti, is described.  They, too, are growing due to foreign aid. There is a need to hold these various component parts together instead of choosing one or the other as real or ultimate.  The holding together of these different spheres can be accomplished within a tension.  The development of a construct, diagram, or visual interpretation of this process presents an opportunity to explore the symbols of our church and the traditional Christian approaches to life's issues.  The process of exploration is far more important than the finished construct, for the construct is only a tool to enable and enhance theological reflection and formation within a parish. Questionnaires were filled out by 59 pastors and 623 lay persons in attendance at charge conferences on the Baltimore Southwest District of the Baltimore Conference of the United Methodist Church.  Respondents were given an opportunity to indicate their expectations of a church 'in mission' and to evaluate the performance level of their congregations.  The total life of the church was covered: spiritual growth, evangelistic thrust, care for individuals, outreach and service, stewardship, recruitment and training of workers, goal setting and the functioning of the Council on Ministries.
