Since these church plants were virtually identical in terms of time and style of service, the need arose to develop something antiparadigmatic. With a rationale in place for a hybrid church to meet on an alternate night, next came the planning and research phase, culminating in the launch of 'The Journey.' One year later 'The Journey' came to an abrupt end. What went wrong? This project consisted of a major survey of 3044 evangelical believers regarding their background and conversion, and forty-seven in-depth interviews with evangelical believers who were raised exclusively in un-churched homes. As a result the writer developed and taught the course, 'Towards an evangelical understanding of Roman Catholicism,' covering post-Vatican II theological developments using concepts of adult education. Although evangelicals have serious doctrinal differences with the Catholic Church, this does not rule out cooperation. The course seemed to slightly increase knowledge of the Catholic Church and confidence in sharing the gospel with Catholics. The second chapter surveys the writings of three influential schools of thought in discipleship and how they interplayed with the author's views on discipleship. It also explains some historical factors which have affected the church's disciple making ministry. The third chapter records the steps taken to improve the church's ability to make disciples. These steps cover many areas: small group ministries, organizational documents 9such as the constitution and by-laws), adult education ministries, leadership development structures, and staffing procedures.
