Using resources modeled on palliative care, leaders assist congregants through the stages of merger or closure.  An educational course for leaders participating in the Lay Servant Ministry program of the United Methodist Church was created. The three-year research focuses on the restarting experience of the Wellfleet United Methodist Church in Massachusetts, which employed strategies from both experiences, the planting of new churches and the turning around of troubled congregations.  The research describes the good, the bad, and the ugly of changing course in people's spiritual journeys and congregational lives.
