As the number of churches and pastors increased, problems such as overpopulation of large churches and competition between ministers started to occur. Thus, a number of problems arose. Some of their traits can be positive such as quick communication, building on tradition, and mutual recognition. This project studied instances where negative expressions of single cell congregations were evident such as indirect communication, the making of scapegoats, and failing to observe boundaries. The relationship between smaller membership churches and the presbytery is of particular concern. The author used surveys and multiple intervention strategies with smaller membership congregations within the Presbytery of Geneva, New York. Her conclusions include that transformational leadership that promotes healthy, vital, and tranformed communities of faith is paramount. The author attempts to answer this question through a case study of his congregation, which offers a perfect example of a small rural church that suddenly finds itself surrounded by unprecedented growth and needing to make decisions that call for major changes. The metaphor 'church yard' represents the entire area of a local church's life.
