Statistical data was collected for over 600 churches in the Baltimore-Washington Conference of The United Methodist Church for the years 1974 to 2014. Graphs were generated that plotted average worship attendance for that range of years for each of those churches and, concurrently, the pastoral leadership of those churches. This project found a decrease in average worship attendance for the Conference, but also found evidence of vitality in many congregations and pastors. Working with a nearby foster care organization, the author adapted a traditional Wesleyan small group approach, Covenant Discipleship, to establish a cohort of congregants from his local church and young adults aging out of foster care, a population often overlooked by communities of faith. The author led a three-year pilot partnership, evaluating program effectiveness using both quantitative and qualitative metrics, and incorporating lessons learned throughout program implementation. Client families built skills and achieved numerous goals while engaged with the program. While many tools are emerging to awaken congregations to the reality of gentrifying areas in urban communities, this project includes the impact of the theological and the sociological to develop intercultural competent leaders. Intercultural competency is one of the leadership tools that offer a greater awareness of the contextual and cultural realities of people, practices and behaviors. Intercultural competency can serve as an intervention of hope in the life of the church. The author conducted a six-week seminar, which immersed participants in a financial literacy class that taught both tactical and spiritual approaches to finances. The analysis of the responses of participants indicated that having faith as a part of their financial teaching was instrumental in their motivation to complete the program as well as implement it. The author led a launch team of forty people to create a new model by focusing on relevant, engaging, transformational worship, spiritual formation, a student/young adult focus, an innovative, agile leadership system focusing on relationships and utilization of gifts, and being a missional church. While individuals are eager to lead, the church lacks a clear succession plan or a distinctive process for mentoring and coaching pastors to lead at the various administrative levels of the denomination. Research shows that effective use of rhetoric and communication empowers leaders to become more effective in casting vision and leading people to take the next step.
