While many tools are emerging to awaken congregations to the reality of gentrifying areas in urban communities, this project includes the impact of the theological and the sociological to develop intercultural competent leaders. Intercultural competency is one of the leadership tools that offer a greater awareness of the contextual and cultural realities of people, practices and behaviors. Intercultural competency can serve as an intervention of hope in the life of the church. The author explored opportunities to bring renewed vitality to a congregation through fulfilling the baptismal promises. The author explored the background of the sweeping changes that the Church faces in the twenty-first century, visited congregations of various sizes and locations to investigate how the average parishioner understands discipleship, and undertook the work of developing a parish covenant as a way of strengthening community and forming disciples for the work of mission. Parish surveys, semi-structured interviews and statistical analysis were employed. Five churches were chosen, pastors of these churches became a part of a study group, mentors were assigned to each church, mentors became a part of a district vitalization team.
