The author coached five pastors to discover an existing need within the communities they serve.  She showed how a particular skill set can turn around a local church in a weakened state of decline. Research from the author centered on interviews of five young clergy within the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. Failure to properly take care of and appreciate the physical body, the Temple of the Divine, has played a role in the lost effectiveness of clergy and the lost vitality of the local church. Drawing on process and feminist theology, the author argues that nurturing the unique expression of the divine within each person leads to an empowered and engaged laity. The author researched biblical models of leadership transition and interviewed clergy for their input in creating this tool. A draft of this transition tool was used by two congregations during their respective transitions in clergy leadership. As suspected, the study revealed an uneven, and sometimes absent, awareness of the spiritual nature of the PNC's work. The resulting project seeks to enhance the spiritual context of the pastor search task by providing suggestions for guiding search committees in a more spiritually-aware process. The author contends that Paul's collaborative style can be a positive factor in promoting church revitalization.  A declining-membership suburban mainline-denomination congregation served as a case study for collaborative leadership in ministry.  The author, who was the pastor, served as a role model of a collaborative leader for co-workers who were in key lay leadership positions.
