In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins observes how effective leaders demonstrate a paradoxical blend of professional will and personal humility. This same paradox is reflected in Jesus' grace-giving, truth-telling leadership. He perfectly modeled how to relate to people redemptively while not compromising in matters of truth and righteousness. This project details a process for enhancing leadership effectiveness by cultivating self-awareness among church leaders in regard to professional will and personal humility. In developing a process to help churches with this transition the writer sought to adapt the principles of Policy Governance [trademark symbol]. The senior ministers of four churches that have had a governance transition by applying Policy Governance principles were interviewed and a pilot program with middle-size churches was conducted. The process included developing a manual for a training seminar and sample guiding principles for follw up consultation. Adopting three missional themes proposed by Alan Roxburgh, the project explores what it means to be missionally evangelical and Reformed and probes its implications for ministry in a small church setting.
