The second chapter puts the approaches and attitudes towards sheltering the homeless into a sociological framework. Chapter three presents data regarding the Tent City demonstration during which homeless people participated in June, 1985, on the Boston Common, which resulted in the program, Family House Project. Chapter four presents the data on Family House Project which set as its main principle the belief that the homeless people could and should have greater control over their lives. Finally, chapter five seeks to analyze Family House Project in terms of two themes: empowerment and community. These retreats were designed and implemented to enable in care students in the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ to identify and critically evaluate familial and psychological factors which have both influenced their call to ministry and the development of a pastoral identity and contributed to their prospective effectiveness as pastors.  The autobiographical and reflective data which has been shared by the participants has been organized around and is used to illustrate three significant thematic expressions of the nature and effect of those factors. The reporting by clergy of any suspicion of certain types of abuse is mandated by state law.  The reactions and observations of selected attorneys, judges, and human service workers about the way clergy report abuse is described.  Issues are discussed.
