The study also examined the meanings of hope and hopelessness in the Latvian cultural and sociopolitical contexts. Findings of the study indicate a higher hopelessness level for men than for women in the sample. Previous research, interviews, and life experiences, affirm that bereaved men have been expected to 'be strong' and to be concerned for others more than themselves. Their styles of griefwork indicate that they prefer to act rather than to talk or express feelings.
