The aim, through individual interviews of pastors and a group session, was to determine if there is a recreation of family of origin issues by the pastor while interacting with the church. The conclusion is that there is strong evidence of the unconscious projection, onto the difficult church, of pastors' personality dynamics, developed in relation to their family of origin and triggered by the personality dynamics of the church. Criteria for inclusion in the study were that Ignatian spiritual directors: 1) be presently engaged in the practice of spiritual direction; 2) had personally experienced a Spiritual Exercise retreat; and 3) practiced the Ignatian method of spiritual direction. A semi-structured interview was conducted with each director. The data indicated that spiritual directors understood what resistance was but were less able to articulate how they handled resistance to change exhibited by directees. Drawn from both the theology of hope and those in the field of a psychology of hope, these resources were presented as an avenue for initiating or rekindling hope among clergy. The research methods employed were both academic and practical. The latter resource was from a compilation of the work presented at two workshops in the Western Pennsylvania Conference.
