The author researched the work ethic of the clergy of the West Virginia Conference of the United Methodist Church. The author presented findings to clergy groups around the conference of how the founders and the theology of the church have informed that work ethic. The presentation included discussion of the Protestant work ethic, the Spirit of Capitalism, and the elements of play and creativity. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of brain injury on one's church attendance and involvement and to investigate how the church can minister to this growing population. Individual interviews were conducted with eighteen brian injury survivors that represented a demographic cross-section of the brain injury population. The study revealed that only 28% of participants had returned to active participation with their church post-injury. The thesis is that most pastors are locked into leadership forms that reinforce their comfort zone and emotional needs. The structure of this paper consists of four components: surveys, biblical exploration, contemporary influences and personal insights.
