The author implemented ways to raise awareness of the services through the hospital. He also conducted a survey among the current chapel congregation. Next, he did a series of interviews of chapel congregants using narrative analysis to gain a picture of the meaning and purpose of the service for the current attendees to provide insights for enhancing the service. The research looked at experiences of biblical characters, reviewed theological reflections, and examined survey and interview responses of family caregivers. The author worked at a major urban hospital to give spiritual care to palliative care outpatients. The author also surveyed fourteen area palliative care organizations to see how they provide spiritual care for this population. He sought to determine centering prayer's efficacy in alleviating perceived stress using Thomas Keating's method of centering prayer and drawing from the contemplative lives of John of the Cross, Therese of Lisieux, and Thomas Merton. Centering prayer was conducted on site one day a week for an hour at a time over a four week period. A review of literature on the ars moriendi tradition reveals common themes of hope, compassion, and patience. For the African American community, the Bible continues to be the source for understanding death. Among this community, acceptance of hospice services has been slow. The project was developed to help the African American community embrace hospice care. An end-of-life care workshop that partnered hospice caregivers and African American church leadership was developed. The author dialogued with twelve physicians focusing on the topic of grief and faith. These physicians shared storied of patients' deaths that were stressful that are consistent with national and international research on the topic. The thesis of this paper is that Bowen theory can be a valuable formational resource to pastors for growing in the ability to minister faithfully in the face of the intense anxiety manifesting in congregations. The seminar met one day each month for eight months. This paper offers a theological foundation for pastoral formation, an introduction to the essential elements of Bowen theory, and draws correlations between theology and the theory. The paper includes a description of the curriculum components and learning methodologies used in the seminar.
