When I first arrived, the church was closed and set to be demolished.  By inspiring the remaining congregation, and empowering them using the principles espoused by the Second Vatican Council of reversing the hierarchy of the clergy and by following Jackson W. Carroll's model of how to exercise authority, they performed outreach in the surrounding community, extending an invitation to non-affiliated Catholics to attend Saint Peter's, and by listening to the spiritual needs of the people. The result was the expansion of the church to the point that it was possible to reopen the church building. It looked at the introduction of art into the worship experience through the creativity of congregation members. It was woven from the threads of feminist theology and spirituality. The Ignatian examen provided the warp of the conversation. The women reported new understandings of scripture, worship and their understanding of God. The project methodology consisted of twelve basic training sessions that enabled participants to build trust with each other, to acquire confidence in sharing their own faith stories as part of evangelism and to be more aware and responsible for fulfilling the stated mission of the church. It briefly traces the historic use of participatory hymn singing and the development of new hymns. Research is centered around an analysis of the favorite hymns of members of a small Connecticut church with members from divergent denominational backgrounds.  The study includes congregational survey results and interview comments of respondents.  The author, a woman pastor, concludes that inclusive hymns concerning language, race and disabilities are important for all people, especially those who have been marginalized from society. The students' involvement with oppressed persons intentionally was planned to encourage a change in attitude and behavior. The students' experiences were connected with the stories of Jesus of Nazareth through dramatic preaching, reflection and conversation.  The actions of the students - serving at the soup kitchen, tutoring, or visiting women in prison contributed to the growth of justice transformation. Second, it describes an eighteen-month spiritual journey with eight lay women and men.  The discipline itself consists of three movements: centering, empowering, and serving.  A series of questionnaires was used to evaluate whether their commitment to ministry and mission deepened. Techniques used were the pastor's home visits and family dialogue which invited family members to write and share notes on topics they agreed to discuss.  The pastor made one home visit before the ceremony of confirmation and the second visit afterwards.  The information gleaned from these conversations shed light on the inner life of the families, their systems, traditions, hurts and hopes. The project, working with a confirmation class, tried to provide a youth ministry program that enabled these young people to become active in the church and to grow spiritually.  Chapter one tells how the project began and describes the development of the youth ministry program (First Congregational Church, Greenfield, Mass).  Chapter two looks at the biblical, theological, and theoretical bases of youth ministry. Faith development and biblical themes are examined and definitions of spirituality are explored.  Chapter three evaluates the project and describes the enthusiasm of the congregation for an on-going ministry with youth.
