A two-year survey of a newspaper's comics page was made to identify relevant material.  The selected comics are presented under wide-ranging topical headings with commentary and reflection.  This could be considered an illustrated collection of sermon illustrations. A growing dissatisfaction with present Protestant preaching indicates a need to pursue a style of preaching with greater use of story telling, imagination, narrative and metaphor.  Six doctrinal sermons which include rabbinic material and teaching style are field tested for their acceptability by church members. The dissertation shows that even young children can learn much in corporate worship and will do so from symbols, symbolic action, through effective learnings, and through participation.  The dissertation begins with a section on the theology and 'theory' of worship.
