Using a qualitative case study method, observations from the wight men were presented in a conversational sequence, and then analyzed for significant themes that were unique to the discipleship experience. The means to spiritual growth were identified, as were the hindrances to spiritual growth. The study used guided, open-ended interviews to explore the faith life of each person and discover how each had learned to love God and others, being transformed into Christ's image. The methodology used in the research was the case study method. The project focused on twelve interviews of pastors from Southern Baptist churches in the state of Kentucky.  The interview schedule was designed around nine research questions. The conclusions reached are as follows. All twelve pastors stressed the importance, or the essence of the spiritual disciplines to their ministry. All twelve pastors identified the importance of the spiritual disciplines but struggled with various obstacles in practicing the disciplines. Eleven of the twelve stated that their 'devotional reading' of the Bible was separate from sermon preparation.
