Modifications were made each year for each group.  There was a concern that the experience be more than a course on the history, polity, doctrine, or theology of Methodism.  Instead of offering a class on information about Christ and Christianity, a process of Christian formation was sought.  Mutual accountability of the covenant group was combined with instruction on the acts of compassion, justice, worship, and devotion, in the atmosphere of faith sharing-telling the stories of our faith. Participants wrote a group covenant, met for 18 weeks for sharing, prayer, and instruction, and used the Sunday Lectionary for daily prayer, meditation, and preparation for Christian living. In this DMin project a Church of Ireland bishop examines the long-term historical background to such events under four main headings of politics, economics, religion and education.
