It answers the questions, 'What are the biblical principles of revitalization?' and 'How can these principles be applied to a historic church ministering in present day America?' A biblical and theological foundation for revitalization is presented through a reading of Jesus' letter to the church in Sardis (Revelation 3:1-6). The second half documents the implementation of the Embers to a Flame model at First Reformed Church. The results are shared through the pastor's personal transformation, a comprehensive statistical analysis in eight areas of ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720660461682688,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:09:30.588Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:31:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:46:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"33403ad3-3bc1-43b0-bfb6-493d2340f45e","accessControl_ssim":["deecd8e1-09f9-4444-8db9-f9fca6a82d27"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Plural elder leadership in a Southern Baptist church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:31:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:37:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6a1b8226-88cd-48d6-a100-4a7bc51df5b1"],"hasLease_ssim":["8927169e-308b-4aa7-88f7-5f33ab7ad02f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Fred G Stone"],"keyword_tesim":["Southern Baptist Convention--Government"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte campus"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Elders (Church officers)","Southern Baptist Convention"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project demonstrates that plural elder leadership was the consistent New Testament model of local church leadership. The answer was discovered through organizational research and interviews of leaders within thirteen parachurch organizations. Eight key lessons were identified: (1) The board is responsible for leadership transition. (2) Transition requires a well-articulated vision. (3) Transition must be an ongoing process at all levels of the organization. (4) Transition takes time. (5) The new leader's job description and profile must be developed. (6) The process must be well-defined. (7) Determine the role of the former CEO within the organization. (8) The respective functions of the board and the new CEO must be defined. An interactive seminar was developed incorporating biblical data, historical examples, and leadership principles that apply to the task of effective transition."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718557451288576,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:36:05.001Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:53:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:40:53Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"02300d20-b3a4-4c77-a72c-cd9f8576a6be","accessControl_ssim":["8f37c0c1-4865-445f-81c3-07371ca3232f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Empowering the local church through mentoring"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:53:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:10:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["82dbbcbb-89ff-4e09-a23c-f8e4a8bda7a4"],"hasLease_ssim":["d96b351f-4b7e-4ce1-83de-0de8e2c1f75f"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["James Saxon"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Women in church work","Students","Pastoral theology--Reformed Church","Mentoring in church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Could the creative, comprehensive integration of the one-to-one methodology into the local church structure as a balance to other preaching and teaching ministries be the catalyst that would provide dynamic linkage between church ministry and healthy, deepening spirituality of Christians? Mentoring, or life-into-life ministry, is the most intense form of community and therefore holds potential to stimulate the most intense spirituality. In a survey of current literature, this study noted the dramatic explosion of mentoring into the everyday life of our culture. The current relevance and effectiveness of the biblical, historical, and current insights on mentoring were tested among seminary students and women's lay ministries and a paradigm for mentoring was constructed from the results. The overall conclusion was that mentoring is a concept whose time has come and needs to be embraced, especially by the Reformed faith group."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715085454671872,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:40:53.847Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:15:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:05:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2013196d-3577-49dc-81d2-ea7453a7ba7b","accessControl_ssim":["749f60b3-edbf-433f-ae50-4f2408af5b27"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Applying an understanding of Reformed spirituality in the lives of PCUSA members to gauge personal spiritual growth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T09:14:56Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:05:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d480f946-9d94-42b9-a12f-ce7ee4fefdaf"],"hasLease_ssim":["9cda7bf7-b5ed-4b66-b562-6f1777b2409a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"year_tesim":["2004"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Randall T Jenkins"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)","Spiritual life--Christianity--Reformed Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis question is 'How can a study of Reformed spirituality enhance the life of a member of a PCUSA congregation?' The answer to this question has its roots in both the Old and New Testaments and is played out for us in the historic development of spirituality from the early Desert Fathers, through the Reformation, and into our present time. The focus of this work is that when these areas of study and discovery are opened the average member's spiritual life benefits and the member experiences a closer relationship with the Lord. Analysis of the issue is based on surveys of those who participated in an eleven week course of study covering the development of spirituality and the disciplines historically associated with spirituality. An emphasis is placed on the change in the understanding of spirituality brought about by the Reformation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716653370441728,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:05:49.128Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:46:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:39:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1810ae64-aa6c-4f2a-8906-edbf240f621f","accessControl_ssim":["71d160a1-9c32-421e-ad69-3c0a64a026a2"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The transformation of church leadership through an understanding of biblical maleness"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:46:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:50:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dcbdfcaf-a6a1-4d19-898d-c746e9379729"],"hasLease_ssim":["d0746b2a-2adf-406a-b415-4e1633cf9f26"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert G Decker"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. Men are designed and equipped to lead the family and the church. Women are to actively help and submit to the man's leadership. This understanding has been the central tradition of the church for the first 1800 years of her existence and has only been challenged in recent centuries. The uniqueness of this project serves to illustrate the consequences that result when men fail to lead by way of three selected biblical narratives from Genesis. The passages are each grammatically and thematically tied by the phrase 'listening to the voice of' or 'obeying the voice of'. For example, the Adam is cursed, not only because he ate the fruit, but because he 'listened to the voice of his wife' (Gen. 3:17). This failed leadership continues to plague men's efforts through two male/female narratives in Genesis (Gen. 16:1-6; Gen. 27:1-44)."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718782841651200,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:39:39.950Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:26:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:58:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"05677314-3b53-42de-abdc-1cb44ef895b5","accessControl_ssim":["ae2697b7-8593-4e83-99a5-b38bcb75fcbc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The ministry of church revitalization 'Embers to a flame'"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:26:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:16:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["73304b98-287c-4fe2-9e79-7326ee9487c6"],"hasLease_ssim":["828a6d74-6924-46c8-9527-936d8279d3c5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["S Donald Fortson"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Harry L Reeder"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church renewal"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation describes the need for church revitalization and gives a paradigm for church revitalization by focusing upon the biblical priority of revitalization and the biblical accounts of the practices of revitalization. The revitalization of a church is not revival or reformation. It is the biblically delineated and identified principles given to leaders to enable a church to move from its disabled and diseased status to one of vitality and health. This dissertation will point out the necessity of this ministry which will be clarified in the introduction of this paper. This dissertation has seven chapters. Chapter one explains why revitalization is necessary. Chapter two gives several key principles of church revitalization while chapter three gives a biblical paradigm for revitalization. The content of chapter four is a review of four contemporary books that have been written on the subject of revitalization. Chapter five highlights the 'Embers to a Flame' church revitalization conference materials and chapter six suggests several key roles that pastors and leadership can play in keeping their church vital and healthy. Finally, chapter seven offers a look at recent Embers to a Flame conference evaluations as well as candid responses from pastors and elders who attended the conference."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716220878979072,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:58:56.672Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":10,"label":"Unknown"}],"label":"Resource Type"},{"name":"creator_sim","items":[{"value":"Fred G Stone","hits":1,"label":"Fred G Stone"},{"value":"Gary R Cox","hits":1,"label":"Gary R Cox"},{"value":"Harry L Reeder","hits":1,"label":"Harry L Reeder"},{"value":"James Saxon","hits":1,"label":"James Saxon"},{"value":"John Kenny","hits":1,"label":"John Kenny"},{"value":"Paul J Bufford","hits":1,"label":"Paul J Bufford"}],"label":"Creator Sim"},{"name":"contributor_sim","items":[],"label":"Contributor"},{"name":"keyword_sim","items":[{"value":"Independent church associations","hits":1,"label":"Independent church associations"},{"value":"Southern Baptist Convention--Government","hits":1,"label":"Southern Baptist Convention--Government"}],"label":"Keyword"},{"name":"subject_sim","items":[{"value":"Assemblies of God","hits":1,"label":"Assemblies of God"},{"value":"Baptism--Reformed Church","hits":1,"label":"Baptism--Reformed Church"},{"value":"Bible.
