The project was a course, too short to effect the kind of spiritual transformation that propels evangelism. During an eight month period (September 2013 - April 2014) I led my congregation in intentional outreach to two specific under-represented populations that we wished to reach - men and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The goal of the project was to reach out to these groups to express our welcome and discover ways to involve them in the life of our congregation. The intent was to live out our belief in welcome and hospitality which Jesus demonstrated through his life and ministry. A men's fellowship was formed for the duration of the project. They chose to meet monthly for breakfast and conversation as a way to strengthen their bonds and create an opportunity to meet new people. A new church committee, the Open and Affirming (ONA) Action committee, was formed to intentionally reach out to the LGBT population. They created visual displays within the church building, hosted an outreach luncheon, and participated in a regional conference for LGBT youth. Both the men's fellowship and the ONA Action committee discovered that hospitality needed to be expressed both verbally and with actions in order to reflect the belief of our congregation that 'all are welcome' in God's sight."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720262090883072,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:03:10.671Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:16:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:27:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bbb09200-de01-4060-a1c5-c55a163d4947","accessControl_ssim":["b6759efc-9718-4ce2-afd6-e5333f041184"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Synagogue studies: uncovering inherent, lived Jewish theology to foster an emerging theology of synagogues"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T15:16:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:32:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2d46ba6f-d366-48ee-9ff6-3ebe92d62b7f"],"hasLease_ssim":["7a18ba1b-2fa9-4118-b94d-b6dda4dfa58c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Scott Thumma"],"year_tesim":["2013"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Aaron R Spiegel"],"keyword_tesim":["Relation (Theology)"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Jews--Identity","Alienation (Social psychology)","Jewish law","Synagogues--Membership","Judaism--Doctrines","Communities--Religious aspects--Judaism","Judaism","Terminology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Jewish identity in America can no longer rely on culture or ethnicity to sustain it.
