This project develops a questionnaire designed to test fifty-seven possible barriers for qualitative research on the issue using focus groups.  This process was carried out in First United Methodist Church, Millington, Tennessee, in the fall of 1995.  The project discovered four categories of barriers: lack of biblical knowledge, lack of practical knowledge on how to witness, cultural effects of Enlightenment thinking, and negative effects of a 'Christendom' mindset. The evangelistic mandate of the church calls it to proclaim the faith and to initiate believers into the faith so that they can claim a ministry as Christians.  The project examines baptism, the Body of Christ, the priesthood of all believers, and church structure.  It includes a workshop (six two-hour sessions) in which laypersons are guided to explore and claim their ministry. Through two non-threatening questionnaires Eastridge Baptist Church evaluated its Sunday morning worship service.  The study benefited the congregation by revealing needed adjustments to details of its worship practice and by serving as a vehicle for the congregation and its new pastor to become better and more rapidly acquainted. By integrating feminism, object relations theory, and theology a theory is created which evaluates the meaning of females' traditional Christian faith as that affects psychological development. A parallel is drawn between cultural gender definitions and male god representation functions.
