Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Tim Graham"],"subject_tesim":["Ministry","Church and social problems","Theology, Doctrinal"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project seeks an understanding of issues related to African Traditional Religion (ATR) that bear upon the churches of the pastors attending a biannual conference on preparing exegetical sermons and to develop a theological statement to be used to discourage ATR from further infiltrating the local churches represented at the conference. The pastors, mostly from South Africa, participated in a Delphi research process that promoted individual input about each person’s encounter with ATR issues in the first round. This input was reviewed and prioritized by the participants in the second two rounds identifying the five most significant challenges of ATR to their local churches. The study concluded with a roundtable discussion intending to address the influence of ATR and whether a theological statement would be helpful in that endeavor. Because the environment being addressed was a pastors’ conference on exegesis, the goal was to influence the preaching of these pastors in a way that would address the influence of ATR. This curriculum focuses on a hermeneutical method which first asks of any given text of Scripture: what did this mean to the original readers?  And then, especially in light of the Bible’s salvation story, it asks: how should this text be preached to hearers today?  This curriculum is very heavy on individual and group participation in interpreting and preparing to preach biblical texts.The writer worked with a team of six other American pastors to train 14 Turkana pastors in this curriculum from 2015-2017.  This project especially focuses on evaluating the transmittal of this curriculum: the training this first generation of graduates has done with a second generation.  Through questionnaires, personal in-depth interviews, and follow-up conversations, it was found that all participants had indeed engaged in rigorous attempts at training a second generation.  Their many joys and challenges were catalogued.  As this training movement would proceed into the future, with the hope of the Lord filling this spiritually and physically barren desert land with healthy, Word-based churches, led by men committed to preaching the whole counsel of God, the writer, at the request of the Turkana participants, has developed a companion Trainer’s Manual to go alongside the Bible Pathways curriculum. To achieve this goal, the project explored mainly two key topics: narrative analysis and a Christ-centered hermeneutic.  Guided by the principles and tools of narrative analysis, preachers and Bible teachers are able to discern the main message of narratives as originally intended by the biblical author.  Guided by the principles and tools of a Christ-centered hermeneutic, preachers and Bible teachers are able to connect the message of narratives to Christ authentically, without distorting or violating the original intent of the narrative.  These considerations of narrative analysis and a Christ-centered hermeneutic culminated in a working three-step method for handling Old Testament narratives faithfully in preaching or teaching.  The project implemented the proposed principles by developing a manual, the content of which was taught in a twelve-hour course to a group of preachers and Bible teachers.  Pre-course competence was assessed and compared to post-course competence by means of a focus group, surveys, a course evaluation, and written work on assigned Old Testament narrative texts.  The results showed a demonstrable increase in competence among participants. Feedback was sought in group interviews and follow-up e-mail surveys. In a self-appraisal survey, congregational leaders ranked Great Commission obedience low among ministry priorities.  This project investigated the question: Can a pastoral approach in expounding Romans 6-8 be effective in developing a Great Commission theology and in advancing Great Commission obedience for select leaders at Mayfield Missionary Baptist Church, Fort Worth, Texas.  The project pursues two goals: 1) to develop the theology of the participants and 2) to develop pastoral preaching effectiveness.        The research design combined both the qualitative and quantitative method.  The writer designed seven sermons from Romans 6-8 in a series entitled Gospel Assurance, a Motivation to Great Commission Obedience. The writer expounded selected doctrinal themes from the Biblical text to develop elements of a Great Commission theology in the participants.  Using a pastoral approach, the writer selected eight congregational leaders to participate in a small group to give feedback on the preaching effectiveness.  In addition, the participants completed a pre and post project questionnaire to indicate theological understanding, opinion surveys, and interviews.  The writer assessed the participants’ awareness, attitudes and actions in relation to the Matthew 28:18-20 mandate to make disciples.      The writer diagnosed the participants’ gain in theological understanding and simultaneously increased pastoral preaching effectiveness through small group feedback. Discipleship is deeply rooted in scripture.  Even at a cursory look, one can easily see its importance to the church.  This is why many pastors and churches have found themselves actively pursuing growth in this area.  There have been countless books, studies, programs, and training opportunities available for pastors and churches to educate their people about discipleship.  However, the process of evaluating one’s effectiveness in discipleship is often a piece of the puzzle that is left out.  This project journals one churches process of defining, assessing, and cultivating their holistic process of disciple making.  As you continue to lead your church through this process of evaluation, you may find this research helpful to your process.  No two churches are alike, and no two evaluations will be identical. Epistles of Paul"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project developed strategies to sermon application across the biblical genres of poetry, narrative, parables and epistles.  The strategies had two goals:  (1) enhance the congregants’ biblical understanding of the text while growing them in Christ; (2) improve the quality of sermon applications in the project writer’s preaching.  To achieve these goals, this project reviewed hermeneutical topics to create a definition of expository preaching.  Based on the definition, a questionnaire evaluated the success of the strategies through a pre/post format of the project writer’s sermons.
