Six clients from the agency were interviewed; the material from the interviews is presented as illustrative material for the discussion. Special attention is given to a research-action project of the Alban Institute.  Insights of three area ministers (denominational personnel who serve as resources to local churches and pastors) concerning matters of long tenure are then summarized from interviews.  The main body of the work involves case studies of five pastors whose tenure in a given location has been from 7 to 14 years.  Written materials provided by each are examined and compared, after which highlights from personal interviews are reported. When people are strongly committed to pursuing this dream and at the same time seek to pattern their lives according to the principles of Christianity, they experience some degree of dissonance -- tension and conflict which is often unresolvable.  This project explores dissonance as a phenomenon through a case study of one man and uses a series of lived moments. Pursuing the American dream and following Jesus Christ, though difficult, are not necessarily antithetical.
