What can we learn from this comparative study?  Historical background, cultural factors, points of emphasis of each church has a lot to do with growth or decline. However, many local churches of both denominations are growing, if there is the dedication of an able, visionary, and spiritual pastor, committed laity, and ministries which meet the physical and spiritual needs of people in the community. Changes in imagery were measured after three hour workshops using secular consciousness-training (relaxation, visualization, and mental rehearsal) alone or with an equal period of spiritual exercises (meditation, contemplation, and prayer). Basic life experiences (centering, imaging, and anticipating) were defined, then discerned in world religions, secular psychology, Christian mysticism, and healing.  Substantial parallels were found between certain forms of relaxation, visualization, and mental rehearsal and particular ways of doing meditation, contemplation and prayer.
