This paper addresses the need for persons in Clinical Pastoral Education to examine the issues of shame, guilt and forgiveness--both in the themselves and their patients. The author's CPE experience during a two-year residency at a state psychiatric hospital and a general hospital in Kokomo, IN, led her to the view that these are issues needing to be addressed more directly than they are presently. CPE students were observed to struggle with transference and countertransference issues resulting from their own personal histories in which shame and guilt played a part, with resulting impact upon interactions with patients, staff, and health professionals. Distorted perception caused by the dynamics of shame and guilt hinders the capacity of person to be agents of healing and forgiveness.
