Five hypotheses tested the essential factors that make up quality pastoral counseling: 1) self-reflection; 2) psychological issues and theory; 3) biblical stories and tradition; 4) theological integration; and 5) the ability to formulate a treatment plan.  At the end of the training course trainees wrote a detailed case analysis based on a scenario presented via video tape. These analyses were used to test the hypothesis. The author found that the Ashbrook-Karl method helped early pastoral counselors develop their self-reflective abilities which increase their self-confidence and ability to learn and itegrate psychological issue and theory.
