The underlying conviction of this thesis--that listeners are always co-creators of meaning along with the preacher in any sermon event--is based upon data collected during a three-year preaching project, and upon the work of a number of contemporary homileticians. The main thesis builds on the work of Fred Craddock who viewed the purpose of the sermon as 'getting something heard.'
