Cognitive and attitudinal changes were measured by means of a pretest-posttest evalution instrument and compared statistically to a control group of twelve lay leaders from Hebron Baptist Church (Meridian, Mississippi). The author's experience during twenty-five years of ministry indicated a serious lack of knowledge by persons serving in that office; therefore, a biblical and historical study of the office of elder was made.  When the study was concluded, the material became part of a course of study designed for elders and deacons-elect in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
