The answer was discovered through organizational research and interviews of leaders within thirteen parachurch organizations. Eight key lessons were identified: (1) The board is responsible for leadership transition. (2) Transition requires a well-articulated vision. (3) Transition must be an ongoing process at all levels of the organization. (4) Transition takes time. (5) The new leader's job description and profile must be developed. (6) The process must be well-defined. (7) Determine the role of the former CEO within the organization. (8) The respective functions of the board and the new CEO must be defined.
