The author uses the metaphor of The Journey to the West, a popular Chinese classic novel, which is analogous to the current situation and perceptions of many Chinese immigrants searching for a better future in life in the United States. He integrates two primary elements as the foundational models of pastoral care:  Jürgen Moltmann's Theology of Hope provides the underlying basis, with Andrew Lester's concept of Hope and Future as a major factor in this thesis.
