The variables measured were: recall, communication, attention, stimulation of thought and emotion, persuasion, and enjoyment.  Groups of students saw either a multimedia presentation or a slide presentation and were compared to a control group, which saw no visual elements.  The multimedia group outperformed the control group, while the slide group performed oppositely.
