The method of research is historical and begins with a survey of some literature regarding the origins of consciousness from the unconscious.  A study of the human personality according to C G Jung is presented to provide a framework for describing the dynamics of the human personality, conscious and unconscious.  A chapter on dreams, symbols and religious experience locates their origins in the unconscious and studies their significance for personal and spiritual development.  A brief history of western Christian spirituality is surveyed, indicating a reverence for the unconscious as a source of spiritual growth and personal integration. The spiritual journey foster s a symbolic level of consciousness in order to attach a symbolic meaning to religion, scripture, church, dogma and ritual.
