By comparing relationships between pastors and congregations to marriage, the project uses insights of couples therapy to develop a model of the relationship that lends itself to the process of termination.  Family theory defines the central role of the pastor in the termination process. Using grief studies and theories of attachment and separation, the project explores psychodynamics of loss for the pastor.  Biblical and theological resources explain separations that offer insight into the ways that clergy might conduct their terminations.  A case study using a composite of interviews tells the story of one termination. The project focuses on men, but in the light of the entry of women into ministry. Working within a Free Church polity, it then suggests there is much the church can to do connect its pastors to the lines of support, authorization and accountability they need for healthier ministry. Its six chapters offer:  1. an introduction on the need to think in expanded terms about our connections; 2. a definition and description of pastoral isolation; 3. a history of the principle of autonomy and its misunderstanding; 4. an analysis of individualism and social virtue, and the personal and communal power needed to balance them; 5. a covenantal ecclesiology upon which to base its recommendations; and 6. a church-wide plan to provide the connecting elements required, the hallmark of which is a thorough recasting of the role and structure of UCC Associations. The author shares the need for developing systems of support and accountability for district superintendents.  She demonstrates the model she used to address these needs in her own ministry and the difference it made in the way she carried out the ministry of superintending.
